Meet Kennedy Avion Thompson, better known by her artist name 99kens, a dynamic creative based in Austin, Texas. Though she hails originally from North Carolina, Thompson has made Austin her home since 2017, immersing herself in the city’s vibrant arts scene. With over ten years of artistic exploration under her belt, her work is not just art—it’s a reflection of her soul and a celebration of her heritage.
Living Single
"[I started with] self-expression. That's where you go find yourself and everything. I just found parts of myself that I was really interested in, art and music and just expressing it in a different way," says Thompson, her voice warm with pride. And that sense of home is evident in every piece she creates, especially in the faces she paints, which are often inspired by people of color. "I love Black people. I love people of color in general," she shares. Her passion for representing emotions through the vivid expressions of those around her is at the core of her work.

Thompson’s artistic process is a blend of discipline and spontaneity. "I’m very OCD," she laughs. "I like things to be set up a certain way." Her setup involves everything from preparing her canvas to rolling up and getting in the zone—her unique rhythm that helps her channel creativity. Though she is deeply committed to her craft, Thompson has learned to avoid frustration by stepping back when needed. "I just never want to not enjoy it," she explains, taking breaks when she feels overwhelmed and returning to her work with fresh eyes.
One of her most cherished pieces is a recent work dedicated to a college friend, portraying a family at an ice cream truck. "It’s the most realistic work I’ve ever done," she says, clearly proud of the piece’s technical accomplishment. This project marked a departure from her usual abstract style, pushing her to master realistic shading techniques with the guidance of a fellow artist.
"I’m usually very bright and abstract," she adds, "but this piece, though bright, was real." The joy and challenge of creating something outside her comfort zone further fueled her desire to evolve as an artist.
Who’s World Is This
Thompson’s art is fueled by her daily experiences, whether they are positive or negative. "Living life constantly inspires me," she says. She’s always looking for new ways to share her experiences through her work. "Even when I’m at work, I’m doodling, like back in school," she laughs, highlighting how her art is ingrained in her daily life.

Her ultimate dream project? A mural. "That’s the biggest I’ve thought of so far," Thompson admits. She’s eager to create something monumental, potentially for an organization, using her talents on a larger scale to leave a lasting visual mark.
Thompson's portfolio reveals a distinctive element that’s becoming part of her signature style: a small figure she sketches on shirts and chains in her paintings. These playful figures, which she often doodles instinctively, have evolved into a logo of sorts for her brand. They add a personal touch to her work, giving each piece a unique flair that people can begin to recognize as "99kens."
And with that, we leave Thompson, inspired and ready to continue her artistic journey—one that is sure to leave a colorful and impactful legacy.
